10-day Andes + Amazon Lodge Tour
Day 1 Arrival to Quito - Transfer In

Our staff will transfer you to your hotel, assist you with anything you need, and give a short explanation for the next day.

Day 2

Quito – Ibarra – Salinas Train – Otavalo

Early in the morning, we depart from Quito to Ibarra city and catch the Liberty train. The ride descends into the warm, dry valley, across sugar cane plantations, magical landscapes, through tunnels, and over bridges that span steep canyons, ridges, and patchwork fields. The Ibarra-Salinas train was one of the most important commercial routes of the railroad, since it carried products from the Andean haciendas to the harbors on the Pacific coast, where they were exported to various destinations.

Once we arrive to Salinas of Ibarra, we will be received by a community who will welcome you with an artistic presentation. Salinas got its name from the nearby salt mines, where the Spanish got salt and minerals that were traded all across their colonies. We'll have lunch after our train experience, and at the end of this trip we'll return to Otavalo to your accommodations to relax and rest for the next day.

Day 3

Otavalo & Surroundings - Roses - Quito

After breakfast, we start our tour in Otavalo and visit the famous indigenous market of Otavalo. This is one of the largest indigenous markets in Latin Amrica, and it’s set in the “Plaza de los Ponchos.” It is characterized by the variety of handicrafts, native paintings, Andean musical instruments, interesting tapestries, Panama hats, colorful clothes, and more. Lunch is served at a traditional hacienda, where we can enjoy the flavors of the Andean cuisine and the wonderful landscapes of this area. We continue our journey until we reach Cotacachi, a town well known for its leather industry; their main production material is leather, so you can find clothes, shoes, and purses of the best quality and stunning design. Then we visit a rose plantation to learn more about their harvest, while admiring the beauty of the roses. In fact, roses provide an important source of income for Ecuador and are famous around the world.
Once we finish this visit, we return to Quito.

Day 4

Cotopaxi National Park – Hacienda

After breakfast early in the morning, we depart from Quito to Cotopaxi National Park, home of Cotopaxi Volcano, which is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world! Cotopaxi reaches an impressive height of 5,897 meters above sea level (19,347 ft). In the outskirts of this beautifully shaped volcano, we will find Cotopaxi National Park – a beautiful paramo ecosystem that is home to many plants and animals unique to the area. After our time in this charming national reserve, we'll go to a traditional hacienda where lunch is served. After lunch, we return to Quito.

Day 5

Amazon RainforestAfter breakfast, our staff will transfer you to the airport to catch your local flight to the city of Coca. Upon arrival, a team member of the lodge will receive you and transfer you to the public dock from which you will board a motorized canoe that will take you to the lodge.

This trip lasts for about two hours along the Napo River. During this trip you might be able to see some birds that come close to the river to catch their prey, and you will catch your first glimpse of the dense rainforest that makes this ecosystem one of the richest in the world. You will also see some small houses from the villages of native cultures that live close to the river. Your first stop is at the dock, where you will be transferred to a paddle canoe, and your Amazon adventure will continue into the eerie but fascinating black-water ecosystem. Once you reach La Selva Eco-lodge, you will be met by the lodge manager and have a short briefing, and then you can rest or walk around the lodge until dinner is served.

Day 6-7

Amazon AdventureFrom days 6 to 7, you will be in touch with the sounds, views, and smells of the nature of the rainforest and the traditions of their native people. These days involve activities accompanied by a naturalist guide and a native guide who will share with you their knowledge. You will be guided on walks through different trails; discover the magic of the jungle, search for birds, vegetation or different animals, like monkeys swinging around, or breathe in the relaxing moments with canoe rides along lakes. Your activities are planned depending on weather conditions, but the lodge is prepared to offer many options to make your time a beautiful and fun adventure.

Among the activities that your guide will plan for you are: walking in the dense rainforest and discovering the many secrets that this forest holds; Climbing a viewing tower that will take you above the canopy of the rainforest, where you can see colorful birds singing their hypnotic tunes, monkeys basking in the sun, and the beauty of nature high above the ground. You will also visit a local Kichwa community and learn more about their customs and their ancient way of life. We will also look at the famous clay lick of the Napo River; located alongside the Napo River, this clay lick is an important source of minerals for parrots which come here to feed on the clay.

You will enjoy all of this and much more while you savor the best cuisine of the area, which combines local flavors with international cuisine, and of course the most comfortable lodging in the Amazon basin.

Day 8

Return to QuitoAfter breakfast, you will take the motorized canoe to go back to the city of Coca, and then take your flight to Quito. At Quito's airport, you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred back to the hotel to rest and prepare yourself for the next day.

Day 9

Full day in QuitoAfter breakfast, we’ll explore Quito; on this day, we are going to see the colonial district with some of the most representative plazas and churches. Here we can learn more about the history of the city and Ecuador as we step back into the past to see some traditions and legends. We will visit the Plaza Grande, where the city was managed during the colonial period and is still today the most important plaza of Ecuador, since the presidential Palace of Carondelet is located here. Around it, we will find the Archbishop’s palace and the Cathedral, which is the most important church of the city and which is one of the most iconic buildings of the city, with its tiled domes.

We will then make our way to the amazing church of La Compañia. This baroque-style church constitutes one of the best examples of art in the city. Beautiful carved images, impressive painting of the Quiteñean school and astonishing gold-leaf altars make this the most beautiful church in Ecuador, and perhaps the best example of baroque art in Latin America.

Lunch is served in a traditional restaurant, where you will enjoy the mouth-watering flavors of traditional Ecuadorian cuisine while enjoying the views of this historical and astounding city, declared as UNESCO’s first World Heritage Site. After lunch, we drive to “La Mitad del Mundo” or the Middle of the World, where you can take a photo standing in the two hemispheres at the same time. There is a monument where the French geodesic mission determined that the equator crossed Earth in the late 18th century. Then, we visit an interactive museum where you can perform fun experiments that can only be done middle of the world. We finish this day by returning to the hotel.
