Day 1 Quito

Upon arrival in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, one of our representatives will meet and transfer you to your hotel to settle in. We will have panoramic tours of Quito's Colonial District and then take you back to your hotel so you can prepare for the next day's activities.

Day 2 Otavalo

Early in the morning we drive to Otavalo, one of the most colorful and traditional cities in the highlands of Ecuador. Here we visit the famous market well known in Latin America for being one of the largest indigenous markets in the region, but also known for the great diversity of handicrafts, colorful clothes, variety of Andean instruments, and the warmness and hospitality of the people. This a perfect place to buy some souvenirs to take home a piece of Ecuador or to see the talented products of local artisans.

After this cultural visit, we will visit the amazing Cuicocha Lake. Located in the crater of a volcano, this unique turquoise lake is a spectacular sight, with two islets in the middle of the lake. With its marvelous volcanic location, Cuicocha is a must-see place during your visit to Ecuador. Continuing with our experience, we reach Cotacachi, well-known for making all kinds of clothes, shoes, and handicrafts from leather. After this visit, we return to your hotel in Quito.

Day 3 Cotopaxi National Park

We leave from Quito early in the morning towards Cotopaxi National Park. We are going to learn about the Andean paramo and all its benefits, but also about one of the highest active volcanoes in the world – Cotopaxi – with an altitude of 5,897 m (or 19,347 ft) above sea level. We'll take a short walk to get up-close looks at the vegetation and learn about the great adaptations animals have made to survive in this environment. After our hike, we will visit a local hacienda to have a tasty and healthy lunch. Finally, we return to your hotel to rest.

Day 4 Chimborazo

After breakfast, we’ll go to Chimborazo National Park, to check out the highest mountain of Ecuador, Chimborazo, with an altitude of 6,268 meters (or 20,564 ft) above sea level. The park has a great diversity of animals, such as alpacas, vicuñas and llamas that we may see on the hike that we will do of the surroundings. We will also learn about one of the most thrilling and unique professions – the “Hieleros” – people that climbed mountains to reach the glaciers and cut huge cubes of ice in order to transport it to noble families in the towns below. At the present time, the purpose is far gone, but there is one man, Baltazar Ushca, who continues with his work and still transports the ice cubes to a market near the city of Riobamba. After this interesting day, we’ll visit a local hacienda to rest for the night.

Day 5 The Devil's Nose

After breakfast we drive to a small town call Alausi, where the train station is located. Along the way, we can see the mountains, the beautiful Colta Lake, and the first church in Ecuador –the Balbanera. Once we reach the train station, you’ll check in, and another great experience begins. Today, you have the opportunity to experience how creativity and engineering were combined to construct a 45-degree zigzagging railway known as La Nariz del Diablo or “The Devil's Nose.” Can you imagine the process of such an achievement in the early 20th century? The train guide will tell you the history of this incredible train, the construction progress, the issues, and conditions workers and engineers had to deal with, and much more.

Later you will have a box lunch, and we continue our trip by going to the Inca archaeological complex of Ingapirca; the remains of the complex are a good example of the Inca’s skills and knowledge. Even though the purpose of the complex is not clear, many studies suggest it was a ceremony temple. After we finish our tour, we go to the beautiful city of Cuenca, where we’ll spend the night; you can rest in the hotel or walk around to see the city at night.
